What makes you come alive? (Encouragement Weekly PhotoChallenge #10)

What Makes You Come Alive

When we think of what to do in our lifetime, most of us think of what the world needs without considering what makes us feel alive.
I wanted to become a doctor because I wanted to help the sick, especially the underserved. Medicine is a very noble profession and there's nothing wrong with the career path I chose. However, after three and a half years in medical school, I realized that I don't feel alive in medicine. I developed depression which led me to the point of wanting to commit suicide. There are other things that I want to do in my life that I wouldn't have enough time for if I'll stay in the path I've chosen. So, I decided to take a break from all of it and try to discover what I actually love doing.

Currently, I'm teaching senior high kids biology to help them prepare for their college entrance tests. I'm writing blog entries, and trying to sell jewellery. So far, these things help me feel alive. I've never been happier in my life.

How about you, what makes you come alive? Share it with us, leave a comment!

  2. One year ago, my husband quit his job to follow a passion. At first I was mad, worried and frantic. But that leap gave our family a chance to move overseas and become closer. Here's to following your passion <3

  4. Yes, that's a tricky one. What makes me come alive is thinking where I want to be in the future. I'm not there yet, but life will be good when I do.

    1. Are you already in medical school? or are you still in premed? As I've noticed, it's not enough to just want to help others. You have a higher chance of finishing med school and loving it if you can envision yourself as a doctor (including the countless sleepless nights, literally, of working in the hospital, and finishing a never ending queue of patients in the clinics, etc.) If you're just in premed, you can change path as early as now. If you really can't see it in you that you're willing to withstand anything that might come. If you're already in medical school, you can try to consider becoming a health writer? Find it within yourself. You must have a strong reason for becoming a doctor (in my opinion). If you just want to do it to help others, remember that you can find other ways to help others. Make sure that you are happy and peaceful with whatever decision you will make. :)
