Make apple more interesting by preparing it using these two recipes! - Jayashree Trao - Guest Post

As most of my friends know, I've been battling with my weight ever since I can remember. I've always loved food and I've been using it to fulfill my emotional needs. I've developed a bad relationship with it and the rest I'll be telling you in future blog posts.

Anyway, recently, I've gained 20 lbs, in less than a year. It's caused by a combination of depression, anti-depressant medications and a bunch of unhealthy choices. I never checked my weight during the last 6 months so I never knew how much I gained exactly.

Of course I couldn't be forever oblivious about my weight so I eventually checked the scale and saw that I'm actually 20 lbs heavier. Shocking! But I did not panic. I know I enjoyed every single calorie I savoured during those unhealthy months. Of course I also know that I have to start watching my health again. (Take note: health, not weight)

As part, of my plan to shift into a healthy lifestyle, I started incorporating healthy food into my diet. This includes more fruits and vegetables, and among my favorite fruits, is the apple. 

Today we'll be learning 2 different apple recipes (Apple Ice Cream and Apple and Pear Salad)  from our Guest, Jayashree. Although the apple ice cream recipe is for cheat days really, but still you can try these recipes out and enjoy!

Apple the magical fruit


Apple is a fruit known to all and needs no introduction. It is one of the few fruits that is available throughout the year. The tree is deciduous and belongs to the rose family. The tree grows large, but today, it is cultivated by grafting, thus smaller ones are seen.

The fruit is sweet and available in many varieties. Red, pink, green, purple are the different colours of apple. The fruit has many religious and mythological significance in many culture. It is offered to many Lords.

The apple is an amazing fruit. Eat an apple when you are hungry and your cravings are reduced. It is a good source of soluble and insoluble fibre. It contains Vitamin B and C. Apples consist of potassium, polyphenols which includes flavonoids, anthocyanins, chlorogenic acid, phytonutrients and antioxidants.

The benefits of eating an apple are many. The polyphenols and flavonoids reduce the risk of cancer. Fibre content helps in proper bowel movement. This reduces the risk of colon cancer. It reduces the cholesterol level in the body. An apple a day keeps the skin healthy and glowing. The digestive and liver problems are also reduced.

It is good to cut and eat a whole apple. Apple can be used in juices, milkshakes, sweets, desserts and salads. It can also be used in Kashmiri Pulav.

The best way to eat an apple is with the skin. Don’t peel the skin, the nutrients are just beneath the skin.

I recently made apple ice cream and it tastes divine. Do give a try, I am sure you will love this.





Apple Ice cream with honey roasted almonds




Ingredients:



· 400 ml condensed milk

· 1 apple

· ½ cup milk

· 200 ml fresh cream

· 1 teaspoon milk cream

· 2 tablespoon honey

· 8 almonds cut into thin pieces.

Method:


1. Wash and cut the apples.

2. Make it into a puree.

3. Add condensed milk and milk to it. Give a swirl.

4. In another bowl, blend the fresh cream and milk cream together.

5. Put the apple and condensed milk puree in an ice cream tray. Gently fold in the cream mixture. Set it in the freezer.

6. Before serving, take honey and roast the almonds pieces in it.

7. Garnish it over the ice cream.

Take a tip: Do not peel the apples.







Apple and Pear Salad.



Ingredients:


1 apple diced

1 pear cut into small pieces

2 cucumber diced

½ bowl pomegranate seeds

1 teaspoon honey

½ teaspoon lemon juice

1 teaspoon olive oil

½ teaspoon pepper powder

salt to taste.



Method:


1. Put the fruits and veggies in a bowl.

2. Add salt to it.

3. Mix honey, lemon juice, olive oil and pepper powder in a bowl. Put it over the salad.

4. Chill and serve.
