What is Medical School Road Trip all about?

The Alchemist
“It’s [your Personal Legend] what you have always wanted to accomplish. Everyone, when they are young, knows what their Personal Legend is. At that point in their lives, everything is clear and everything is possible. They are not afraid to dream, and to yearn for everything they would like to see happen to them in their lives. But, as time passes, a mysterious force begins to convince them that it will be impossible for them to realize their Personal Legend.”
- Paulo Coelho, The Alchemist

Recently, I picked up on my long lost hobby of reading. I remembered having a quick-read book that had been sitting on my shelf for 8 years. We were required to make a book review about it when I was a high school freshman. Since then, it was never reopened. I tried to remember what it was about, but I couldn’t. That made the book perfect for rekindling my love for reading.  From that book, I quoted the lines above.

The book is about a boy who gave up everything in pursuit of his Personal Legend, and how the universe conspired to lead him to it. Reading it made me think about my own life, and my own Personal Legend. Have I embarked on the journey leading to my Personal Legend? Or as stated above, have I been convinced that it’s impossible?

As a child, it was my ambition to become a doctor. Back then, my concerns were simple. I could dream to achieve anything because I had my whole life ahead of me. However, no one remains a child, and like everyone else, I matured. I got preoccupied with growing up that the ambition was forgotten, and was replaced with new career optionsAs Paulo Coelho would put it, I was convinced that it will be impossible for me to realize my Personal Legend.

The thing with a Personal Legend is that it remains there no matter how far you drift away from it. It’s incorporated into the core of your being.  At the right time, mine revealed itself again to me. I may have forgotten about it, but it never forgot about me. Right now, I am about to set out on the journey towards my Personal Legend of becoming a doctor. I will not allow doubt to convince me again to give up on my dream. I know I’ll get there. God will take me.

And this, my friends, is what I will be writing about. I will not be teaching you how to become a doctor, or to convince you to become one. I will share with you the things that I learned and will be learning as I progress in pursuing my dream of becoming a doctor. I’m hoping that through this blog, my fellow aspiring doctors will be helped and inspired as they go through their own journey.
